Canon EOS 450d vs. Sony A350?
Which should I get for my first DSLR? The Canon EOS 450D is the same thing as the EOS Rebel Xsi (N.A.) and the EOS Kiss X2 in Japan.
Which do you recommend and why? Which is more future proof? I’ll be getting the single Lens Kit for both. Or should I buy just the body and buy a better lense? I’ve heard bad things about the kit lenses.
IMO, the Sony A300 is a better value since the only difference between the A300 & A350 is 4mp.
I also give an advantage to the Sony since it has its version of Image Stabilization (IS, which Sony calls Super Steady Shot) in the Camera Body. The advantage is that every lens you use will have the IS benefit -and you only have to pay for it once. With Canon and Nikon if you want IS you have to pay for it with every lens you buy. Although there is evidence that a lens-based IS is marginally better, the Feb. 2006 issue of Shutterbug* (http://www.shutterbug.com) has a test of the Maxxum 5D, an ancestor of the current Sony DSLR cameras. In the test, by Peter K. Burian, he took 2 shots with a 36mm equivalent lens, hand-held, of a yacht at anchor. 1 was with the IS Off, 1 with it On. Both large prints look nearly identical – until a small section is enlarged. The one taken with IS is considerably sharper.
As far as lens selection is concerned, the Sony can use every legacy Minolta Maxxum AF lens made since 1985. Plus you can choose from the new Carl Zeiss “ZA” (Zeiss Alpha) line of lenses.
If your future needs are a concern, Sony is expected to release the A900 later this year. This will be a full-frame (24mm x 36mm) sensor camera comparable to the Nikon D3 and Canon EOS 1Ds Mark Iii.
Always remember, there are no professional cameras but there are professional photographers.
